Arabic Courses

Arabic language and culture courses are offered ocassionally at the University of Indianapolis.

LANG-101 Arabic Language and Culture I
This course is designed to introduce students to fundamentals of the language, essentials of conversation, grammar, practical vocabulary, useful phrases, and the ability to understand, read and write simple Modern Standard Arabic. The course also introduces students to the cultures of the Arabic-speaking world.

Through the five basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and cultural knowledge, you will acquire basic knowledge and understanding in the following areas:

  • The writing system, sounds and pronunciation of Arabic letters
  • Develop accuracy and fluency in pronunciation and writing of Arabic letters
  • Writing basic sentences
  • Reading basic Arabic texts
  • Basic rules of Arabic grammar
  • Learn to use culturally appropriate social greetings and other expressions

LANG-102 Arabic Language and Culture II
This course is a continuation of Arabic Language and Culture 101 and is designed for students to acquire additional vocabulary, the rules of Arabic grammar, and reading more complex materials. Modern Standard Arabic is taught in this course to allow students to acquire additional knowledge and understanding in many areas of the Arabic Language. Students in this course are exposed to reading and listening materials that are of more depth and length than those used in Arabic Language and Culture 101.

LANG-201 Arabic Language and Culture III
Further development of comprehension and communicative skills in the language. There will be readings of moderate difficulty and grammar review as well as practice in writing. The goal is attainment of intermediate proficiency in the language.

LANG-399 Intermediate Arabic
Emphasis on reading and writing continues in this course, reinforced by practice in communicative competence
