French

French continues to be an international language, spoken in many countries and on almost every continent. It has real global impact. Because the University of Indianapolis has one of the highest percentages of international students in the state of Indiana, students of French here have an opportunity to study, converse, and interact with francophones from a variety of nations. Such an opportunity not only allows our students to develop competence in the varieties of French spoken around the world, it also provides the occasion for learning about a variety of other cultures world-wide.

Through our Special Topics in Literature offerings, French students can study the francophone literature of Africa, the Antilles, and French Canada as well as the classics of French literature. From Molière to Daniel Pennac, from Mariama Bâ to Gabrielle Roy, our students have a wide array of literary choices and genres. These courses also offer valuable insight into the cultures of the other countries where French is spoken.

Students of French have the choice of short, introductory travel-study opportunities in France and Quebec through our spring term travel courses, or a semester or year's study in a francophone country. Because we offer several cooperative programs, we are flexible enough to help students find just the right courses to fulfill their special linguistic needs as well as courses which will forward their study of a variety of fields combined with French. The Department of Modern Languages works hand-in-hand with our International Division and the individual student to select appropriate and useful programs for study abroad.
